Energy Audit
An energy audit is a survey of a building or facility that provides sufficiently detailed information to allow the owner to conduct energy or water-savings programs. The energy audit will include information such as appropriate energy and water conservation maintenance and operating procedures, energy conservation measures, energy saving calculations, pay-back estimations and strategies to implement the measures. BESL offers both high-level and in-depth energy audit services.

Commissioning
The basic purpose of building commissioning is to provide documented confirmation that building systems function is in compliance with the intent of the owners and occupants, and to satisfy the owner's operational needs. Commissioning of existing systems may require the development of new functional criteria in order to address the owner's current systems performance requirements.  BESL is a member of the Building Commissioning Association.

Measurement & Verification
The International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (MVP) provides an overview of current best practice techniques available for verifying results of energy efficiency, water efficiency, and renewable energy projects in commercial and industrial facilities. It may also be used by facility operators to assess and improve facility performance. Energy conservation measures (ECMs) covered in the protocol include fuel saving measures, water efficiency measures, load shifting and energy reductions through installation or retrofit of equipment, and/or modification of operating procedures.

Texas A&M researchers within the BESL group were some of the first developers of the M&V processes that have become practice today, and that have been incorporated into the IPMVP and FEMP protocols.

Renewable Energy
Renewable energy technologies are alternatives to fossil fuel that utilize the natural environment, while decreasing negative environmental impacts through reduced emissions.  These technologies  stimulate economic development and fuel diversity through alternative energy infrastructure development.   BESL provides consultation on renewable energy technologies and can assist in technology transfer from the private to the public sector.
